Chapter 18

Kitchen Warfare

We took one more glance around the luminescent cavern before entering the apartment and locking the door behind us. It was supposed to be super durable and protected, but I would rather not take any chances of getting surprised by a random mob.

Well, perhaps we could actually test that one day. I was slightly curious about how that magic worked. Would we hear something banging on the door, or would something block it from even approaching the entrance, only allowing it to get closer after the safety mechanism was no longer able to hold out?

Maybe the Dungeon Forum had an answer to that already. I would need to check that in a free moment.

I glanced over my shoulder at Aisha, who was following me. “You good after our brief jog?”

“A scratch here and there, but nothing much overall. I can’t imagine trying to push through a bigger group of those, though. It would be like running through a dense forest with leafless branches.”

“You just imagined it.” I smirked at her.

She smiled back, rolling her eyes. “Alright, Mr. Funny. What’s the plan? Do we take a break for a moment or get in there to scout a little more?”

I turned back to the front, leading us to the kitchen. “The situation isn’t as bad as to make me quit instantly. We need a few changes in our approach and we are good to go.”

“And what does salt have to do with it?” She raised a brow at me, arriving at my side.

“I guess you don’t know much about Woodmen?”

Aisha shrugged. “Only that you want to split their chests open to get to the Sprout. And that they make great fuel for campfires. If you cook meat over it, it will have an herbal, seasoned taste. Quite delicious, I would say.”

“I certainly wasn’t aware of the latter. You are right about the former, though. Fortunately, chopping them down isn’t the only viable way to deal with these monsters.”

We stepped into the kitchen, and I began going through the cupboards, bringing out lots of table salt. Aisha watched me and helped out a little by taking the bags from my hands, putting them down on the counter.

“Are Woodmen scared of salt? Or are you going to intentionally salt their soup and watch them die from shock?”

I chuckled. “You aren’t that far off. No, they aren’t afraid of salt, per se. They will be, though, the moment we make proper use of it.” I glanced over at my drakan partner and gave her a cryptic smile. “Could you please fill the kettle with water and set it on?”

Looking between me and the kitchen appliance, Aisha seemed a tad confused by the unusual request. She followed it without voicing out any doubts or concerns, however, perhaps getting curious about where all of this would lead us.

“Actually, leave the kettle. Get that pot over there. Let’s make more than just for one use.” I waved my hand at her.

“At this point, if you aren’t making soup, I’m going to be really disappointed,” she said with a smile.
